Michael Cacnio and LEGO Join to “INSPIRE”

Michael Cacnio and LEGO collaborate to “INSPIRE” - Celebrating twenty auspicious years of artistic talent as a brass sculptor, Michael Cacnio collaborates with the much-acclaimed global brand LEGO in an exhibit entitled INSPIRE that opens on September 16, 2011, at THE GALLERY of Greenbelt 5, Ayala Center, Makati City.

In INSPIRE, Cacnio recreates his trademark brass sculptures with the combination of LEGO bricks that colored his childhood days while keeping the rustic and naturalistic air that animates his works. The collaboration is an unlikely marriage of freeform monochromatic brass and polygonal colorful plastic, challenging the norm and defying preconceived notions about beauty.

The INSPIRE exhibit advocates the importance of imagination, creativity and knowledge. It encourages one to step out from the realm of familiarity and rouses the imagination with the attitude of playfulness and boldness in Cacnio’s works.

Before we go to the exciting details of what can mothers, like you and I, can do with our Smart Rewards Points, I would like to give a brief introduction on what is SMART Rewards?

SMART Rewards Program entitles Smart users to earn Smart Rewards points. These Smart Rewards Points can be earned every time you load and re-load for SMART prepaid subscribers; make IDD calls using SMART, or from your SMART bill charges (for Smart post-paid subscribers). That means the points you earned in January will still be valid till the last day of December. Come January, the points you earned from February till January of the next year will be the only ones still valid. Points expire every first day of the month.

How about if you are not registered to the SMART Rewards Program? Does that mean you’re not earning any points? Do not fret. You are still earning SMART Rewards points. The only difference is that the SMART Rewards Points will only be valid for 6 months instead of one year. So it’s a win-win to register to the SMART Rewards program especially that its just one text away to enjoy your Smart Rewards points.

Also, the only way to redeem your Smart Rewards points is to be registered in the SMART Rewards Program.

Movie Bonding with My Son, Krispy Kreme, and Green Lantern

Watching movies is the great time for bonding with your family and loved ones. The other night, I had chance to watch the movie “The Green Lantern” and I spent it with my son CJ.

CJ really loves Green Lantern and he was excited to watch the movie. Adding to the lovely experience is tasting the “Green Lantern Kreme Doughnuts” since Krispy Kreme was the sponsor for the movie . My son really loves doughnuts so it was really a treat.

The limited edition doughnut will be available until July 10, 2011 so you have to hurry! You have to try Krispy Kreme’s version of the comic book classic "made of rich chocolate dough, smothered with Hershey’s milk chocolate icing, doused with confectioner’s sugar and topped with a dollop of green jelly". The best part which surprised me as well was that it was not too sweet. Just right and best paired with a cup of Krispy Kreme coffee. :P

I and my son also enjoyed the movie, of course. He was shouting in the cinema at times, specially when Green Lantern appears. I was a little embarrassed with the other movie goers but I was able to manage that since my kid is not "makulit".

The Human papillomavirus or HPV is the necessary cause of cervical cancer. It is a common virus that is easily transmitted. (McIntosh N. Human papillomavirus and cervical cancer. JHPIEGO 2000)
8 out of 10 women will have HPV in their lifetime, the virus that causes cervical cancer. 3
Locally, more than half of the women with cervical cancer will die within 5 years after diagnosis, the Philippines having one of the lowest 5-year survival rates in the world. (Philippine Cancer Facts and Estimates 2005).
Early Cervical Cancer generally produces no signs or symptoms. (Ault K. Infect Dis OGyn 2006.)
All women are at risk. All women regardless of age, lifestyle or economic status areat risk of cervical cancer (Intl J Gynecology and Obstetrics Nov 2006)
Vaccination alongside screening is a woman’s best defense against cervical cancer. (Goldie SJ. J NCI 2004)

HPV: the virus behind cervical cancer

HPV is a common virus that can be transmitted not only by engaging in sexual intercourse, but also from mere skin-to-skin contact (rubbing) of genital area (even without penile penetration)
Most HPV infections heal on their own; but this doesn’t apply to all cases. When an HPV infection persists, it could develop into cervical cancer.

Preventing Cervical Cancer through Screening and Vaccination

Pap Smear: A screening technique wherein cells are scraped from the cervix and examined under a microscope to check for disease or precancerous changes.

VACCINATION: There are now vaccines available against cancer-causing HPV types 16 and 18. Along with regular screening, getting vaccinated can reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer due to HPV types 16 and 18 by 94%.5
For young girls between 15-25 years old, long-lasting protection is necessary because this is when they will be the most prone to the HPV virus.6 However, that doesn’t mean that women under or beyond that age bracket are safe. An HPV vaccination should provide long-term protection for all women, since they will be vulnerable to HPV infection throughout their lives 7-9
HPV vaccination is currently not included the DOH’s public health programs such as the Expanded Program for Immunization and Cancer Control Program.
The DOH, however, established a Cervical Cancer Screening Program in 2006. It is a nationwide program that includes sustainable capability building, educating, and training health workers on cervical cancer screening methods such as VIA(Visual inspection with acetic acid), pap smear, and the like.

Preventing Cervical Cancer through HPV Vaccine

A cervical cancer vaccine should provide significant protection for women against the two most common cancer-causing Human Papilomavirus (HPV) types (HPV types 16 & 18) for the long term.
HPV types 16 and 18, together, are responsible for over 70 percent of cervical cancer cases in Asia Pacific.
Vaccine efficacy against other cancer-causing HPV types beyond HPV 16 and 18is also an important thing to consider. This includes the HPV strain 45, which is the third most common cancer-causing type in the Philippines. HPV strain 45 – also prevalently causes an aggressive form of cervical cancer called adenocarcinoma among Filipinas.
Females as young as 10 years old may be vaccinated as well as women of mature age. Ask your doctor about cervical cancer protection through screening and vaccination.

Chicken and Assorted Mushrooms Pasta

1 tablespoon oil
¼ cup onions, thinly sliced
¼ cup button mushrooms, chopped
¼ cup straw mushrooms, chopped
¼ cup tomato paste
2 tablespoons brown sugar
¼ cup unsalted butter or margarine
2 cups EL REAL Curly Macaroni, cooked to package directions
To taste salt and pepper
5 pieces chicken nuggets, fried and sliced

Chicken Mushroom Pasta Recipe with El Real Pasta

Cooking Procedure:

Sauté onions, button and straw mushrooms in a pan then add tomato paste, sugar and butter.
Cook for 2 minutes then Season with salt and pepper.
Pasta toss in cooked EL REAL Curly Macaroni and mix and transfer to plate preferably topped with fried chicken nuggets.

This is the first time I actually heard of this EL REAL pasta brand, and I think it's worth a try since its from Universal Robina Corporation’s (URC). And indeed, this recipe would be a good idea for this coming Mother’s Day.

Gardenia Frozen Delight Recipe

Here is the Gardenia Frozen Delight recipe from the SM Hypermarket event:

Gardenia Frozen Delight

Ingredients:

6 slices – Gardenia Double delights Ube and Cheese Loaf
1 (250 mL) – All Purpose cream, chilled
¼ cup – Condensed milk
6 pcs – Peaches in can, drained and sliced
½ cup – Instant Gulaman, cooked

Procedure:
1.    Combine all purposed cream and condensed milk in a small bowl.
2.    Spread 1-2 tbsp of the cream mixture at the bottom of a loaf pan.
3.    Place 2 slices of Gardenia Double Delights Ube and Cheese Loaf.
4.    Top with cream mixture and layer the peaches on top.
5.    Repeat until the pan is filled.
6.    Pour instant gulaman on top of the cake.
7.    Refrigerate the cake at least one hour before serving.
8.    Serve 5-10 slice

Guilt-Free Choco Lava Crinkles and Mallows

Hot Choco Lava Mallow

Ingredients:

¼ cup Choco Lava Powdered Chocolate Drink
1 cup water
½ cup mini marshmallows
1 tablespoon ready-made chocolate sauce

Procedure:

Mix Choco Lava powder and hot water, then pour the mixture into a mug or cup. Sprinkle the drink with marshmallows and drizzle with chocolate sauce.

For a more romantic presentation, sprinkle Choco Lava powder on the serving saucer.

Choco Lava Chocolate Crinkles

Choco Lava Crinkles

Ingredients:

1 ¼ cups Choco Lava Powdered Chocolate Drink
2 cups and 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
½ cup white sugar
½ cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
½ teaspoon chocolate extract
½ cup confectioner’s sugar

Procedure:

Preheat oven to 350º F. Mix Choco Lava powder, all-purpose flour, baking powder and salt, then set the mixture aside. In a medium bowl, mix white sugar and vegetable oil. Beat eggs into this mixture one at a time. Add vanilla and chocolate extract, then stir. Add the dry ingredients in batches. Refrigerate the dough and chill for one to two hours. After the dough has chilled, line cookie sheets with baking paper. Roll the dough into balls, measuring about an inch each. Coat them in confectioner’s sugar, then place on prepared cookie sheets. Bake in preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes. Leave on cookie sheet for a minute before transferring to wire racks for cooling.

Joyce Ferro-Orillosa, an early childhood education specialist who has been teaching for 10 years explains that “According to the active learning theory, children develop knowledge and learn by being physically and mentally engaged in learning activities. Children engage in play naturally and enjoy it. They do not engage in activities to learn; they join because it’s play or because it’s fun.”

With a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership and Management from De La Salle University and a masters’ degree in Early Childhood Education from Assumption College-San Lorenzo, Ferro-Orillosa shared other fun techniques to help moms encourage their kids to love learning.

It is encouraged that parents create and design a home environment that would encourage children to sing songs, recite poems and play educational games—some activities enjoyed by kids during the Play to Learn Pre-School Tour.

Parents can also motivate their kids to love learning and study well by simply listening to their kids and allowing them to express their thoughts and feelings by using kind, encouraging and affirming words; building on the kids’ strengths and never focusing on what they cannot do; and by celebrating learning milestones.

“Learning must be age-appropriate and must be child-initiated. It should also support social interactions...Most importantly, the learning environment must be safe and secure,” Ferro-Orillosa adds.

Parents should make sure that fun learning in school goes hand-in-hand with the children’s learning at home. These tips and techniques—from integrating fun in learning activities to setting an atmosphere that fuels it—inform and empower parents as they hone their kids’ love for learning.

Seeing former single celebrities turned happy moms, makes me feel old. :) It means it has been years since then. Nonetheless, the presence of their cute and cuddly babies erased it all. Celebrity moms and babies put their unique movement skills to the test as the active babies competed at the first ever Pampers Celebrity Babylympics.

Active babies displayed their unique talents in a series of activities. There were guests cheering and clapping in enthusiasm as babies crawled in and out of tunnels and took on the playful challenges.

Opening the Babylympics was celebrity mom and Pampers Playtime Ambassador Vina Morales with her baby Ceana, who lit the torch to signal the beginning of the games. RJ Ledesma hosted the babylympics.

Five moms and their children vied for the Pampers Babyclympics medals – Nancy Castiglione and her baby Joaquin, Chesca Garcia and her baby Kendra, Karel Marquez and baby Keylie, Jennifer Sevilla and her baby Simon Rafa and Aubrey Miles with her baby Hunter.

At the end of the program, Baby Hunter with mom Aubrey Miles, baby Kendra with mom Chesca Garcia, and baby Simon Rafa with mom Jennifer Sevilla finished first, second, and third places, respectively.

I Wash With Passion!

Procter & Gamble recently unveiled Downy's luxury line of fabric conditioners - Passion & Attraction - in "Scents to Remember" gala lunch event at the Manila Peninsula.

Guests were asked to identify the Downy Perfume Series, Passion and Attraction, in contrast to actual perfume. Both Downy Passion and Attraction were said to contain a unique blend of perfume oils, plus special touch-activated technology, to give clothes a long-lasting perfume-like scent.

Downy's "Scents To Remember"

The first fragrance was developed by Hector Esquinca, P&G’s Perfumer and leader of the Asia Perfume Development Program, and was inspired by French perfumery, specifically, French pastries, flowers and fruits. He described it as “sweet and vibrant. We have blooming apple blossom from southern France blending with pear stripes immersed into a rich vanilla scent, ending in a touch of icy raspberry enveloped in warm cedar wood.”

Passion by Downy has a delectable, fruity fragrance with apple blossom, freesia and vanilla as its top and middle notes, and fresh mulberry and cedarwood as its bottom notes.

On the other hand, Attraction by Downy was created by fellow P&G Senior Scientist and Perfumer Shingo Ishii. It was inspired from the gardens of Grasse, France (perfume capital of the world) and is a fresh but very alluring floral fragrance.

"Perfume or Fabcon?" Downy Passion Challenge

I was caught by surprise the other day when a package arrived at home. It was a package with two mystery towels and some candles.

It said: "Perfume or Fabcon?" it turned out to be a Downy Passion Challenge where I was asked "How sensitive is my nose?" And if I can telll the difference between perfume and the new Passion by Downy.

First, I am to identify which among the two towels has been sprinkled with perfume and which one is washed with the new Passion by Downy.

Second, I should post my answer in this mom blog.

And my answer is Towel 1!

I do wash most of my favorite clothes and I do use Downy. Although I haven't used the new Downy Passion, my familiarity with the good smell of Downy readily gives it away.

Mother's Day - Also For Our Second Mothers

The second Sunday of May has been dedicated to pay tribute to our moms on a special day - Mother's Day.

SM Supermarket Celebrates 25th Anniversary

The country’s largest supermarket chain - SM Supermarket, celebrated its 25th anniversary last week by launching the next phase of the Greenbag Project and introducing the 25 members of the new SM Food Council.

It also revealed the new logo as a sign of progress in their 25th year in the business, giving their loyal customers more improvements to look forward to.

“...We want to do our part and encourage our shoppers to help save the world with us. Our hope is to trigger a chain reaction and make the Greenbag our first step towards a sustainable future. The Philippines has given us so much, its time we do our share in giving back to our country,” said SM Supermarket’s Hendrik Sy.

1.    When is the Eastwood City Easter Wonderland?
The Easter Wonderland will be on April 4.Registration starts at 1pm. A parade at 2:45pm pm will open the festivities. Booths and activities will open at 3:00 pm The Wonderland is open until 8pm.

2.    Who can join?
The event is ideally made for kids aged 15 below. To join, they have to buy a Wonderland passport worth P500.00

3.    Where can they buy the passports?
There will be an advance passport selling. Interested parties can buy passports on the registration desk on the day of the event. The registration desk is located at the Art Planet, which is at Eastwood Mall Open Park. But early registrations are welcome at the Eastwood Mall Concierge starting March 19 until March 31. They can be reached at 709-0888 or 709-9888.

4.    What can be seen at the Easter Wonderland?
Seven Worlds of Play and Imagination will be spread out in the entire Eastwood City commercial development, each one with a unique and interesting theme which kids can choose from.

Eastwood Mall Open Park will be home to two main attractions: the Art Planet and the Animal Ville which will feature egg painting sessions with Master Fernando Sena, pony rides, and a petting zoo. The Food Factory, meanwhile, will be at the Eastwood Mall Atrium, where CCA, Pizza Hut, Mrs. Q Cupcakes, Sandwich Guy, and Krispy Kreme, will each be giving food preparation and cooking techniques and free food samplers.

Eastwood City will turn into a mini theme park of Easter Wonderland on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010. Wonderland passports will be sold starting March 19, until the event day to access all the activities and booths inside Easter Wonderland. It's an event for the kids, mommies, and the whole family!

From Expo Mom to Expo Kid!

If we had Expo Mom before, now, there'll be Expo Kid. It will be held at The Rockwell Tent on March 6, 2010.

Happening on a family day Sunday, your mommy day will start sunny at 10am and end 8pm.

Not only for kiddos they're also for moms. Expo Kid intends to showcase products for children which are educational and fun, activity providers, options for summer activities, and entertainment for your kids like kiddie parties and more.

Kids below 12 yrs old goes in free. Regular entrance fee is 25 pesos and goes to a MomShare beneficiary- The Kids Ahoy Little Rescue Missions. They are also accepting art materials, school supplies and books as donations on the site.

Baby Yoga For Your Baby's Developement

I first tried yoga, specifically Hatha Yoga, back in 2005 as a class in a local gym in Ortigas. I liked it and still do so from time to time.

During that time, I never imagined that yoga exercises can be applicable for kids too, much less for infants. :) And so I was initially surprised upon hearing about the Pampers Yoga Stretchycise developed by Pampers, Gymboree, and the Mother and Child Nurses Association of the Philippines (MCNAP).

Pampers Yoga Stretchycise is characterised by a routine similar to play that combines yoga moves with stretching which they say will help encourage the development of baby's mind and body. Sound like the same yoga I took. :)

Now seriously considering the thought, it is common sense that those stretching and guided movement would indeed help in the baby's muscle and motor movements. Mommies should of course do it with care and proper guidance as baby's bones are still delicate.

I also learned that it is in the first two years of a child where the brain grows fastest. Particularly before a child can speak, movement is the way for them to explore and learn about their surroundings. It is at this stage as well where they develop new skills.

In conjunction with the said Pampers Yoga Stretchycise (baby yoga) activity, Pampers introduced their new product - Pampers Active Baby diaper which is said to help encourage the baby's free movement with its elastic sides (stretchy side tapes) that follows a baby’s body shape, allowing a more comfortable fit - moms, take heed! I have yet to see one beyond the attached image though :)

Mommy Manila is born! A blog for moms, from a non-mom! I felt that it was also a good day to start this new blog being a palindrome day - January 11, 2010 (01-11-10).
