Celebrating Life: World Cord Blood Day 2017!
Life is a celebration. Although majority of us face different levels of challenges and problems everyday, we should not cease to be thankful for our what has been given us, specially our precious life.
In the same way, Cordlife Philippines today leads the celebration for this important event. Designated as the first ever Word Cord Blood Day, November 15 marks the need to promote awareness and expand education on the life-saving benefits of cord blood and cord blood banking.
What is Cord Blood?
Cord Blood is a new area and non-controversial source of stem cells that saved thousands of children from dreaded diseases through 40,000 cord blood stem cell procedures performed since its discovery upto this day.
It is the blood that remains in the umbilical cord after birth. It contains the healthiest stem cells that can replenish blood, regenerate damaged bone marrow, treat blood cancers and correct genetic defects.
Cordlife Philippines aims to highlight on the importance and benefits of saving cord-blood for treatment of leukemia.
However, cord blood saving is not yet popular in countries such as the Philippines which is generally conservative. Nonetheless, we believe the day will come when, through dissemination of information, more people will take it into consideration.
Saving Cord Blood
Are you aware that cord blood is being thrown away in 98% of childbirths? It is considered as generally a medical waste in the medical industry.
In fact, a cord blood stem cell transplant was performed by Dr. Eliane Luckman in France in 1998 and saved the life of a young boy suffering from Fanconi Anemia. It's a genetic blood disease that affects the bone marrow.
World Cord Blood Day
This month, a ceremonial pact was held between Cordlife Philippines and its celebrity partners - Vanessa Matsunaga, Nina Corpuz and host Dimples Romana.
Cordlife Philippines together with its ambassadors and their families celebrate World Cord Blood Day to further raise awareness on cord blood banking and the benefits of cord blood in treating several life-threatening diseases such as leukemia, thalassemia major, lympoma and other blood disorders.
In case parents will decide to save the cord blood of their children, Cordlife
Philippines will collect the cord blood and bring it to their facility in Quezon
City. It will be kept indefinitely or until the child turns18 years old.
